I had dinner with a bunch of friends yesterday. We enjoy the dinner and chatted about recent activities.

But after some time listening to them, I found out that most of their conversation is negative. They mostly complaint about their work, how they feel they were underpay, they were not getting satisfaction from what they did and how they want to quit their job.

Then I asked them do they realize what they are doing? They told me they don't know. And when I revealed to them most of their talk is negative, they told me that is the reality of working for some one else. They even said that they are not as lucky as I am to be able to find a business and profit from it.

Then I asked what are they going to do about their complaints? You know what they told me? They said they will wait it out, may be things will better later the year.

I nearly hit my head on the table after I heard that. I told them, “Guys, you all knew what the problem is for each of you. You all just wanted to wait it out instead of taking charges of your own career? I mean how can you all be so passive?”

I told them that since we were all out here, we might as well take the chance and discuss how we can change our current situation. Each of us can speak about own problem and have a discussion with the group. Isn't that a more productive outing?

Then we started to talk more about solutions than complaints. Opinions and suggestions were flying in and the atmosphere totally changed.

We ended the night with a promise to come out more often. I hope that my friends would consider applying the suggestions we exchanged last night.

I used to think like them but since I took up my sales job, I hardly think like that anymore. I learned that opportunities are available for each of us, we just need to take action to get it.

And the first step of taking action is to be positive about the current situation we are in.

Be positive about:

  • Resources on hand including your expertise
  • Past experiences
  • Future
